Knoxville sits in a bowl of a valley surrounded by the Great Smoky Mountains to the south, the Cumberland Mountains to the north, and the Cumberland Plateau to the west. Not much air circulates, so in times of calm weather, we're enveloped in a soupy miasma of carbon particulate pollution, kind of like Los Angeles but without the palm trees and movie stars. All those particles do create some dramatic skies, like this sunrise from last week.Happily, rain and wind have cleared the air for our upcoming Labor Day long weekend.

Great name. Since I work evenings (in Knoxville) I missed that sunrise. If I go outside during supper break I see some awesome sunsets.
Wow! What a colour! We have the same sort of effect where I work as its near the motorway and our small local airport. The sunsets can be stunning due to pollution!
I had trouble commenting on yesterdays post (blogger wasn't playing!) What I tried to say (3 times!) was that I'm like you and am scared of the manual settings! If you have a go at it, I'll have a go! Also I liked the photo in B&W best. It really shows up the worn steps well and takes out the distracting colours. Got there eventually :)
Despite the pollution, this is a gorgeous sunrise.
