Pressing Matters

Ever wonder how they get those designs in concrete? Well, wonder no more, here's the secret: they press a mold into the wet concrete. This is an archive shot of the reconstruction of the Church Street viaduct downtown.

Yep they do that. My wife's niece is married to a cement contractor and they will color concrete, while wet and then stamp it with a brick pattern and it lasts like that forever and looks like brick forever. Your photo is a classic example of what he does.

I thought it was very neat to watch the patterns as they were restoring this bridge. I thought it was cool they made it solid, but had the spaces in it. Same way. Somebody is currently building a house in Dandridge totally concrete. Their mold slipped and they got a very slanted window. They have cut the bottom back out straight. Keep watching for them to do the same with the top part of the opening.

I always thought they came that way from the cement factory! Learn something new every day!

Well I never! I always thought they were pre-moulded sections. Interesting!

I always thought the concrete was pre-molded at the factory and then put into place....very interesting!

Wow! As our lovely Virginia would say, whodathunkit?!?!

I never gave this much thought but I suppose I was of the "it comes from the factory that way" school. Cool picture and lesson today!
