Late Summer

Summer may be winding down here in East Tennessee, but it's not gone yet. Early September is still packed full of heat and humidity and lush green growth, even in the heart of downtown. But there's a rhythm to the season as afternoon shadows grow longer and days grow shorter, birds migrate through town, and late blooming plants reveal their colors.

Here's a burst of color in a vacant lot on Jackson Avenue: thistle courts butterfly, afternoon sun glows through opaque wings and traces veins on leaves.

What a fantastic photo. And your text - I can almost feel the humid afternoon. Great post.

What's humid. Oh yes it's that moist sticky heat thing we have one day a year. Wet,wet, wet here. Hardly any butterlies this year, so this is lovely for me to view.

On the linking sounds good to me. Better idea, I'll swap my population for yours, so long as yours bring the JD and a little ice. Mine will bring Manx Kippers.

Thistles are beautiful and they do attract a lot of insects. I like them in spite of their thorns and hope they don't get a foothold in my yard.

Your photo is excellent of this butterfly and this thistle.

When Abe says you nailed a butterfly you should take a bow cause he's the master. You photo and comments today were just lovely. There are some outstanding writers in this bunch. My hat's off to all of you.
